A. concert m aid of tbe funds of the Tin* wald Church was held on Thursday evening at Tinwald, and passed off m a satisfactory manner. There was a fairly good attendance, and thd Rev Mr Garbett presided. Solos were contributed by Miss Barratt, Mrs Denshire, Mrs Tippete, and Mr D. Thomas, a pianoforto solo by Misa Bell, a pianoforte duet by Mrs Claridge, and Mr T. Gates, and an organ solo by Mr T. Gates. St Stephen's Ohoir, under the leadership of Mr H. Gates, rendered a number of oarols and part songs. The usual votes of thanks were passed at the oonolusion of the concert.
A trout weighing 20jlb was caught .n the Opihi river, near Mr Wigley's, a day or two ago.
Our Alford correspondent writes : — (< Wednesday was tbe hottest day experienced this summer. At Alford House the thermometer m tho sun registered 155 degrees. Tbe instrument used there is a Negretii and Zambra, the blackened bulb containing the mercury being enclosed m a vacuum, whereby the full reoord is indioated. Until evening there vr.-is little or no wind stirring, which caused the heat to be extremely oppressive."

We are glad to find that at the instance of Mr Walker, M.H.8., the Government has reopened the Post |OQioe at Aahburton Forks. Mr W. Campbell has baen appointed Postmaster. This will be a great oonvenienoe to the residents m the Forks districts.
Large congregations assembled yesterday m the Wesleyan Ctiuroh to hear the Ray J. S. Smallsy, Oonferenoe Evangelist, and Mrs Smalley. In the morning Mr Smalley took for his text " Sanotiued by faith m me " (Aots xxvr, 18), and addressed, professing Christians chiefly. Ia the afternoon a large number of childran assembled m the ohuroh and were addressed by Mr Smalloy. In the evening service Mrs Smalley gave the prinoipal address. It was basod upon the Saviour's words " Will ye also go away ? " and was very effective. The ohuroh was p&oked, and all present appeared to be deeply interested m the lady's disoourne. Towards the oloaa of the meeting the somewhat unasual oourae was adopted of asking all those present who wished to be prayed for to hold up their hands, when twenty or thirty responded. It was intimated that the Mission would be eon* *inued daring the week, and a mid-day prayer meeting be held m the ohuroh from 12.30 to I.SO
The annual pionio m oonneotion with the Aehburton Presbyterian Ohurch and Sunday Sohool took place as usual on New Tear's Day. The teachers, scholars, and friends met at the churoh at 10.30 a.m., and accompanied by the Rev. A. M. Beattie, marohed m classes to Mr Andrew Orr'i grounds, East Belt, where the games of various kinds usual to suoh gatherings were held. During the day orioket, rounders, foot races, &0., were m full swing, and % large number of toys for prizes having been provided, there were spirited competitions without number among the juveniles. Swings for the little ones had been erected, and also a tent for shelter from the eun, which shone forth fiercely till 4 o'olook, when a sudden change took place, the wind coming up m- strong squalls from the south-west, and causing some of those present, m anticipation of a downpour of rain, to leave for home. However, " Jupiter Pluvius " did not appear, and the evening turned out the most enjoyable part of the day. The ohildren and teaobers had * very bountiful repast at midday and at fire, there being tea and refreshments of various kinds m abundanoe, with fruit of neveral sorts. There were about 200 eoholars this number including a good many from Wakanui and distriot. The Key Mr Baattie gave eaoh scholar a book, and also preeented several prizes for proficiency m the •« Shorter Catechism." The whole affair passed off very happily, and was as fully suoeessful as those of previous years, m spito of the sudden change m tho weather causing the break up of the gathering somewhat earlier than usual. By 7 p.m. the grounds wera clear of all the visitors, all retiring |well pleased with their day's outing and entertainment, heartily thanking Mr and Mrs Orr and family, the Key Mr Beatcie and family, and the teaohers for the attention and kindness shown to all and the bountiful supply of good
things. I At the R.M. Court this morning, a lato ar* rival from the Old Country who had been " Beeing the new year m," was orderad to contribute tho sum of 5s toward tbe revenue of tbe country or m default of payment to go to prison for 24 hours. He cleoted to " take it out." On Saturday last the picnio m connection with the Fiemington Presbyterian Sabbath Sohool was held m one of Mr Grigg's paddooks near the ohuroh There were over 100 present. There wore refreshments m unlimited quantity, and the afternoon was pleasantly passed m sports and games of various descriptions. About half-past seven all went to the church where addresses were delivored by the Hey A. Blake, Mr J. Dunn (tho superintendent of the sohool), and Mr H. Donaldson. Votes of thanks to those who had contributed towards the success of tho gathering were passed at the conclusion of the meeting. Since tha last date tbe number has diminished and still tends to do so.
