Mr Chamberlain has arrived m London, and is conferring wilh Lord Harrington on the question of forming a coalition with the Conservative part/. Lord Hartington is »t present undecided, lest the Liberal party should oppose the coalition. Efforts are being made to induce Sir Michael Hicks-Beach to take the leadership m the House of Commons. A section of the Conservative party are endeavoring to induce Lord Randolph Churchill to re-enter the Cabinet. A conference takes place today between Lords Salisbury and Hartington. Latkr. Lord Hartington has declined to accept the Premiirship, or leadership of the Commons, as he believes he can be of more use to the Government outside the Cabinet. It is believed that Mr W. H. Smith will be leader of the Commons. Lohdow, Dae<*mhc«r St. It is stated that Mr VV. H. Smith will be leader of the Commons, but will retain the position of Secretary for War, Mr Stanhope being Chancellor of ihe Exchequer, and the Earl ot Carnarvon will succeed Mr Stanhope as Secretary for the Colonies. Stanhope takes the Chancellorship of the Exchequer and Lord Canarvon Secretary for the Colonies is now known to be premature. To-day it was stated that the Chancellorship and leadership of Commons has been offend to Mr Goschen who will support the Conservatives and will congest the seat For the Fxcbange Division, Liverpool, rendered vacant by the death of I Mr David Duncan.
