Excursionists on board tho steamer Shag were startled whil » pro eeriing down tho bay by an explosion, followed by clouds cf steam from the boiler room. Many had a narrow escape from being scalded, while many others narrowly escaped going overboard with the rush. It "was soon ascertained that the cip of the safety valve had been blown off, and that thero waH n<» danger, but tho progress of tho steamer was slow, and anything but satisfactory to the excursionists

B*rnhill, Castle Kock. is supposed to have been drowned m the Waiaa, Manaoouri run, last Wednesday. ]t appears he left a hut where he lived to go to nnother to pr-cure some Bait As he did not return search was made, and his clothes were found on tho bank of the river. It is surmised he had stripped with the intention of bringing a canoe from the other side of the stream, as he hud frequently Bp iken of doing. 1119 river is very rapid and cold. This is tho second young relative of Mr Barnhill who has been lost by drowniug m the district within a ftw weeks.
