SPECIAL NOTICE. DURING the past twelve month* five jewellers in Christchurch have either filed or been compelled to close their shop*, and now some of the old established firms are advertising “ selling off” sales to reduce their stock, and as they state they never had a sale, some for 10 years, others as long as 33 years ago,the only stock they can offer is only an accmnulatii n of old stock during all these year*, which is fit for nothing ehe but the melting pot. This clearly shows that the public will no longer support the old system of retail business. Ihe 01 dinary retail dealers have to buy their goods fnm the wholesale merchants here, and then have to pay heavy expenses, and so are obliged to charge exorbitant profits to try and cover all these extra expanses.
