Christchurch, December 22, At an extraordinary general meeting of the Canterbury Froran Meat Company to-day. it was resolved by a large majority, “That in view of the existing freight monopoly, which practically limits available space as well as maintains an exorbitant rate of freights, the Directors be empowered to engage tonnage for » period not exceeding two years, or five voyages for each steamer, in advance, to each extent and on such conditions as may seem to them m ist likely to meet the requirements of shippern, and faoi itate the export of meat from Canterbury, the rates of freight noc to be more than per lb ” There are seventeen cases for the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court against ten persons. There are nine charges of forgery, five of burglary, two of perjury, and one cf ind cent assault. The application for a change c f ;• ,< « in Hall’s case will be made to-morrow Mr C P. Halbert, Mayor in 1884, is mentioned as a probable candidate for the Heathoote seat.
