The following extract fro-i an English paper describes the state of thin-s in Martizburg, the capital of Natsl :—“ We are having some very striking times out here just now with the goldfields in the Transvaal, where splendid things are turn. Ing out, and several people I know have made large fortunes. The shares in some of the gold companies are at tremendous premiums. Their first dividend paid up the remaining amount of the £l, and now these ■hares are telling at from £BO to £IOO. Fancy what a return for 2s 6i ! I bought 100 * Moodie’a ’ shares at 4s 6d. and th«n ■old them a few months after at 11a, -wWch Is more than 110 per cent. I had also fifty shares in a company ca'led 'Annie’s Fortune.’ which cost abou f £ls and a mouth after I told them for £36. A.t present I am in a gold prospecting syndi cate—that is, about twelve of us down here In Natal subscribe £2 or £2 10s a month, and send np one of our number with a power of attorney for each of us, who goes np to the fields to prospect and if he comes across anything good pegs out a claim far •acb of ns, which he either works or els 1 floats a company to work it, I know one man down here who pegged out a good Claim In the fields and sold it for £60,000.’’
