He has taxi n pains wit<\ it, and finished it < ff in a creditable manner, consul- ring it ts, we u derstand, the first piece of asphalting ha has taken in hand. Some defective places in East street have been repaired. —He painting t tbrary Walls, S.W end : We have arranged to call for tenders at once for this work Will the Council autho ise the Works Committee to accept

Crs Bird and Williamson alio sp-ke directing attention to the necessity of the work, CHI'ISTMAS HOLIDAYS. It waa reso, .ed that ha Council's offices should be closed from Friday, Deo. 24th, till Monday, January 3-d. STREET LIGHTING. The Lighting Committee wore instructed to report as to the beat and most economical wsy of lighting the streets daring next y-*ar. HOSPITAL BOARD. In consequence of the term -f office of the present Mayor, Mr K. Friedlandar, drawing to a cl ise, it was resolved that the Incoming Mayor, in conjunction with Or Harri on, should represent the
Borough Council on the the Bcapital Board RESERVE. The matter of denting with the reserve held by the late Mr R Wilkin was left io the hands of the Reserves Committee with power tc art LEAVE OP ABSENCE. Cr Thomas ob.ained two months’ leave of absence. V'LKDICTORY. As the present was the last occasion on which he would preside at the Conuoil meetings, the Mayor expressed his thanks for the consideration and kindly feeling with wh'ch he h*d always been treated by Councillors. He also paid a high comoliraant to the Town Cle k, Mr C Braddell, for the able as istanoa he had always w llingly rendered. Cr Wdllamson expressed him»-clf in erms of prsise in i-egsrd to the se-vice aff r ed t'.esjj B .rough by the Mayor. He h pod the Connell would not lose the benefit of the Mayor’s experience s.d advice. He proposed a motion recording the i igh appreci.a ion in which the Conned held the May r’s s-rvices. Cr Bird -econded the in tion. He also bore testimony to the efficient manner in wnich the Mayor had fulfilled hi- duties, and t-u t-d that although he was re'iriog from the Moyoral chair he would not leave the Council.
The motion was put to the meeting by Or Williamson, and carried wit aoclama’i'>n. The Mavor briefly returned thanks for the c impliment ted him. He said that if it was the desire of the burgesses and the Council -hat he should "ffes himself for election to the vacancy which would shor y be caused o- the Council, he would accede to their wish. (Hoar, hear.) LICENSES. The fi'llow'iig i'Cjm*es were granted : Kero-ene, Ore a--d Alcorn ; carriage, J. Htff-.rd ; driver, J Brff rd. PAYMENTS Accounts amounting to £72 2s lid were pas-ed for payment and the Council adjourned.
