ANOTHER STEAMER MISHAP.
Wellington, December 9. The Westport Co*l O mpany’s steamer Kawatiri which lefi|Welllugton for Westport on Tuesday, returned to p rt this morning. The Ciptam reports that the vessel struck Pan itolo island npir D'Urville Island at 10 40 pm on Tnea day. It appears that the chief officer wag on deck at the time, and the weathci w; s thick. He caught a glimpse of the land a minute or two before the vessel struck The engines were reversed, but it was of no avail. Attempts were made to kedge the ve: sel off, bat were unsucotcsful. The captain sent a boat to intercept the steamer Oowa t\ b and from Lyttelton to Wesrport, which was- d-ne, and the steamer esme to the assistance of the Kawatiri and managed to pull her <ff reiterday. The Kawatiri is making but little water and will go on the slip to be surveyed. The vessel is insured,"
