THE CABLE TARIFF

Wellington, December 7. The following correspondence has passed between the Postmaster-General and the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company:— Dunedin, 30th November, 183 d. Dr Lemon has set; led with the rinparin* tondent the amount of guarantee on behalf of the Press Association. I aae no prospect ot my getting a guarantee from Beater or the Australian Press, The matter now stands that you charge for six months from this date (29 November) the same rates as before lat November, excepting as to Press Association, which you charge 3d a word, on a guarantee that it will spend on cable massages, irrespective of land lines, no less than £398 Is sd. and there is to be no subsidy. It is understood that you arrange for a guarantee, if yon reqnire one, from Reuter and Australian press.

Jdlius Vogel. To the Chairman Eastern Extension Telegraph Company. London.

Sir Julius Vogel, Wellington-

Sir, —I have received yonr telegram of 20th November, wh'ch correctly states the arrangement come to. Let me add my satisfaction at the termination of the diffarenc}, and the hope that the willingness of the Company not to let the telegraphing public suffer from the former differences between <ha Company and the Government wifi weigh with the authorities in New Zealand, when the whole question is re-considered before the end of the six months

Chairman E. E. Co.

Since the guarantee was given to the Cable Company Ly the Press Association Reuter's Company have decided to take advantage of the. redaction if passible, and are now negotiating as to terms. The decline of the tariff to 3d a word means that the New Zealand papers will shortly receive about twice as much cable news as they do now for the same cost-.
