THE BRIGHTON ELECTION. London, November 29
Sir G. O. Trevelyan having declined to contest the vacant seat, Mr Robertson, Conservative, has been elected to the House of Commons for Brighton vice Mr D. Smith, deceased.
UNDERSECRETARY EOR IRELAND.
It is announced that Sir Redvers Buller has been appointed temporarily to succeed Sir R. Hamilton as Undersecretary for Ireland.
LONDON WOOL SALES. London, November 30.
The wool sales opened to-day. There was a large sttendance of Home and foreign buyers. The catalogue comprised io,ooo bales. For greasy merino, prices ruled halfpenny to a penny lower than at the close of the last auctions, and for scoured merino prices from a toad lower. The series close on i6th December.

EARTHQUAKE.
Sydney, November 30.
A severe shock of earthquake was experienced this morning over a large area in the country districts, where the walls of houses were cracked and ceilings fell in.
