Walker, enquired why it was the benevolent i.ig'ituu'ons in 0 ago cost £IO,OOO, while in 'autorhury they were double that amount The Chairman said that figures showed about ■JTAOOO for Otago and £16.500 for Canterbury. From information he had received he under--io d that a large number of cases of distress n Otago received U tie or no attention, while in Canterbury no cases were neglected. Several members supported the Chairman’s view.
