LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Ashburton Borough Council meets this evening. Mr Mackay, the Master of the Ashburton Hospital, left home early yesterday morning and has not since keen heard of. Some apprehensions as to his safety are felt. The following officers were elected at & meeting of the Junior Cricket Club on Friday evening:—President, Mr A. Harrison ; vicepresidents, Messrs E. Blackburn. At the B.M. Court this morning, before Mr B. Alcorn, J.P., a first offender for drunkenness was fined 5s and costs, with the usual alternative. It will be remembered that a week or two ago a petition was forwarded to Wellington, through Mr J. Ivess, praying the Government to acquire land in the vicinity q! Ashburton for a village settlement. In reply Mr Ivess received the following from the Minister for Lauds :—“ln reference to your letter respecting land for the establishment of a village settlement, I regret that the powers contained in the Land Act of 1885 for the purchase of private land by the Government are virtually a nullity, as po sale can b 0 consummated until after a resolution of both Rouse?, This |s one of the questions which must he dealt with next session. It is of the first importance as affecting the immediate and future welfare of a very large part of the colony in the South Island.—l have, etc., S Ballance.
The attention of members of the Ashburton | Lodge of Druids is drawn to an advertisement which appears elsewhere. We have been requested to remind farmers and stock-dealers that the usual sale of stock will be held at Tinwald to morrow. Twenty years ago Caffrey’s father committed suicide by shooting himself on account of family troubles. Proprietors are pulling down the empty houses in Levuka, to avoid the municipal rate. Four families under the Small Farmer Regulations arrived by the s.s. Tongariro, the amount of capital introduced by them being over £2OOO. The Alameda with the San Francisco mail arrived at Auckland on Saturday night. Our usual budget of mail news appears elsewhere. Notice in reference to a rate levied under the provisions of the-District Kail way Purchasing Act, in the Bakaia and Ashburton Forks Railway district appears among to-day’s advertisements. A meeting of the Ashburton Lodge of Oddfellows will be held on Friday evening to consider business of importance. It is said that the oldest son of the Prince of Wales is to marry an American lady. The stock of princesses in Europe is playing out, and the Royal Family of England has decided that it is well to form an alliance with America. " Teeth inserted gratis,” is the simple announcement on the fence surrounding a Wellington mao’s garden. This delicatelyworded warning is in reference to the proprietor’s bull-dog, who is in the habit of inserting his teeth free of charge in the calves of intruders’ legs. During October 1364 persons arrived in the colony, and 861 departed from it. The arrivals were principally from the United Kingdom (625), New South Wales (381), and Victoria (231). Of the departures only 81 were for the United Kingdom, 307 for New South Wales, and 374 for Victoria. How New Zealand meat sometimes suffers is shown by the fact that quite recently & Hammersmith butcher was fined £4O for selling New Zealand frozen mutton in a putrid condition. Some of the buyers had thought it was in the nature of New Zealand mutton to be rather “ tasty,” and had eaten of it with most painful results. The butcher in question also dispensed diseased pork. SANDER and SONS’ EUCALYPTI EXTRACT.—Cure of Skin Diseases. Invercargill, N.Z., 3rd of July, 1880. Messrs Sander and Sons, Sandhurst: —Gentlemen.—Having suffered from eczema (a skin disease which is ■ very prevalent in this colony) for about nine years, I had consulted numerous medical men here and in Australia, and had taken arsenic, strychnine, iodide of potassium, etc , internally, and had used preparations of zino and lead externally. In fact, I bad tried all the remedies known to the faculty, and what between travelling, doctors’ and druggists’ bills, had spent a small fortune, almost, if not wholly, without results, except to injure my constitution. Daring a recent visit to Hokitika I was recommended to try your Extract Eucalyptus Globulus by a brother who had experienced great benefit from it in alleviating a very severe cold, and no less to my surprise than satisfaction, I found the disease which troubled me so long was conquered, and the skin resumed its normaloondition. This was effected. by the external use of less than two two-ounce bottles. Youra, etc, Signed John H. Kerr, Manager Union Bank, of Australia, Limited.—(Advt.)
