LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Clerk of the'District Court notifies in another column that the next sitting at Ashburton for bankruptcy business will be held on Thursday next. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Junior Crioket Club was held last evening, when about thirty intending members put in an appearance. After discussion it was agreed to form a Club lor Junior Cricketers, and the following officers were elected; —Presidents, Messrs E. Dimant and H. Matheson ; captain, D. T. Todd ; deputy, captain, E. S. Buchanan ; secretary, A. McLennan ; treasurer, A. Carson. The Secretary was instructed to make arrangements for a match at an early date with the Borough Crioket Club. We learn that the Ashburton Woollen Company are making a trial of the Mount Somers coal at their factory, and should it result satisfactorily, as there is every reason to believe, it will doubtless lead to a large consumption of this coal for machinery purposes in this district. Cars typical of the colonies were a feature in the Lord Mayor'a procession. It is rather complimentary to the New Zealand Constabulary that the Sydney police were greatly taken by the neat and serviceable uniform worn by the Auckland police officers who went over on the Gaflrey and Penn expedition, and expressed a wish that some such uniform were adopted there. To-day’s Lyttelton Timet has the following :—lt is said that there are in circulation a number of counterfeit pound notes. One man was let in yesterday to the extent of a pound note, which he tried to pass but was unable to do so. Shopkeepers and others should take warning by this, and inspect every note tendered to them. It is necessary (says a Home paper) again to warn the public against the general but very dangerous practice of extinguishing paraffin and other oil lamps by blowing down the chimney or lamp glass. A fearful result of this has occurred at Westbourne, Bournemouth. A mother hes, after intense suffering, had both her arms amputated close to the shoulders, and death has ensued. The father, in putting out the flames, so severely burnt his hands that work to him is impossible for some weeks. Seven young children, the eldest ten years the youngest three months, increase the burden and responsibility. During her long reign, Queen Victoria has had to appoint no fewer than 21 Prime Ministers. German bulls sometimes even outrival the famous Irish ones. “ The chariot of revolution is rolling onward, and gnashing its teeth as it rolls,” was what a revolutionary leader once told the Vienna students in a speech. The leading Australian timber exporters are New Zealand and Western Australia, who last year exported £152,000 and £104,000 respectively, New South Wales coming next with £IOO,OOO. There was some amount of controversy a short time ago as to Milton’s indebtedness to Vondel, and now a writer In Book Lore calls attention to the similarities between “Paradise Lost ” and the •* Adamo ” of Giovanni Soranzo, published in Italy, in 1606. He shows that many passages in the latter re* sembles otbeia in the former, and thinks that Milton must have met with the “ Adamo ” when travelling in Italy, and that portions of it lingered in his memory when composing bis great work.
