NATIVE OUTRAGES AT RARATONGA
Auckland, November 13 Arrived—lsland mail steamer Janet Nicol, with a cargo of oranges and other fruits. She brings news cf native outrages on board the Auckland schooner, Jessie Nicol, oa August 24th wh la at anchor at Baratonga harbor. At II pm. a gang of natives boarde i the schooner and began to annoy the crew. The cook was on shore The son of the captain was first attacked, and rendered unconscious by a blow on the head, and brutally kicked Captain Short ai d the crew rush on deck, but being withou* weapons and greatly ontnumV ered, were separated and all badiy maltreated, Makeatane, King of Atiiu and the consort of Queen Makes, of Batatonga, wbs with the natives and incited them to the outrages, shouting “kill the white pigs.” U bis king visited Auckland last year and was entertained at Government expense After doing a lot of damage and purloining some stores the natives went ashore and had a feast. A complaint was made to the British Consul at Baraionga, who fined Makeatane 300 dollars and ordered him to fi d enhst-tutes for several Injured men who had been left ashore. The cook’s condition was so critical that his depositions were taken, but he has since nervered. H.M.S. Pelican has visited the group i nd compelled payment of tha fine aud also exacted a fine of 300 do’lars from the natives of Mitiaro Island who, in August last, committed an outrage ou the captain of the lackland schooner Atlantic by tying him to a tree. Capt. Short’s narrative has been obtained via Tahiti, but the Jessie Nicol was expected to arrive at Auckland shortly. When the steamer left Tahiti Earl Dudley’s steam yacht was there, en route for Auckland, Wellington, and Sydney; also Dr Phe'p’s schooner yacht Brendila, which is expected to visit this colony
