At the end of July a penniless and, at the time, almost friendless person committed anicide at St. Lonis, U.S. He proved to be James L. Birkley, at one time almost a millionaire in America, In his prosperity he bnilt a residence for himself at Newark, in which every modern extravagance was indnged in, and artists were engaged from the East to put finishing touches to panels and frescoes, and to hang the walls of the prinoipal chambers with the most costly paintings in the market. The grounds were laid out in the same extravagant manner, fountains and rockeries alternating with parterres and almost transformed Into a marvel of picturesqnences.
