WAKANUI ROAD BOARD
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wakanui Road Board was held on Saturday. Present: Messrs M. Bruce (chairman), Brown and Lill. chairman’s REPORT. > The Chairman reported that Mr Shury had brought an action against the Board for damage sustained to bis trap in crossing one of the water-race fords. The case came before the Resident Magistrate, who gave a verdict for the Board on the ground that the wrong party had been sued. SETTLEMENT OF ACCOUNTS. A letter was read from Mr John Ollivier, who bad been appointed to make a settlement of accounts between the Wakanui Road Board and Hakatere Town Board, stating that the amount due to the latter body was £39 19s 2d. He also apportioned it a gravel reserve at the corner of the Sheffield and Wilton Roads, part section 23472. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read (1) From Mr John Brown asking the Board to make a ford in lieu of present culvert on Leatham’s road—work to be done when the maintenance man is in the locality.—(2) From Mr R. Adams suggesting as portion of the road to his house had been washed away by the late floods, and as there was no outlet for him or the settlers below without making a detour of several miles, that the road through Mr Wilson’s property should be thrown open, and that the Board should purchase a piece of Mr Jameson’s land for completing the road.— Matter to be considered after Surveyor’s report'had been read. —(3) From the Ashburton County Council forwarding copy of Engineer’s report referring to the propriety of giving vent to storm water along natural depressions on the plains, and requesting the Board to give effect to the recommendations contained in the report.—The Board agreed with the recommendations of the County Engineer, and the Surveyor was instructed to have watercourses where obstructed opened up.—(4) From Mr B. Ennis applying for £lB 15s lOd, which he stated was due to him on a contract. —The sum of £l3 15s lOd was passed for payment. surveyor’s report.. The Surveyor’s report was read an follows: —(1) Cochrane’s road : The metalling of this road let at last meeting has been completed. —(2) Fairfield road : The clearing of tussocks off the centre of the road has been finished. —(3) Boundary road: The clearing oft of boulders and filling of side ruts has been completed.—(4) Hampton road : Soon after last meeting we had the breach at the protective works repaired sufficiently for light traffic, but, unfortunately, soon after its completion a heavy fresh in the river damaged it to some extent. We immediately bad rails erected to stop traffic, pending the subsidence of the flood; as it will take but little time to repair, the maintenance man can do it. Any work done here cannot be expected to withstand freshes in the river, unless the bulwark is extended about three chains. We consulted with the County Engineer, who will bring the matter before the Council.— (5) Milton road: The erection of sheep bridge, granted at last meeting, has been done.—(,6) Beach road : The bridge over the mill race has undergone the necessary repairs by the Board’s men.—(7) Maintenance man : The maintenance man is now employed ploughing roads in No. 3 Ward.—(B) Tenders have been called for metalling Fitzgerald’s road, and ploughing roads on the Plains, lenders will be invited next meeting for metalling portion of the Fairfield road,—(9) Seaside .road, Shipka pass: Mrs Graham is removing the fence on the road. The report was adopted* DEPUTATIONS. Mr M. Wilson waited on he Board in reference to a ford, which it was resolved ihould be made. Mr Megeon waited on the Board and asked tvhy the (metalling of Fairfield road bad not seen undertaken. Mr Megson was informed that it was intended to call tenders for next meeting. TENDERS. The following tenders were accepted: Ploughing, D. Johnson, 18s Fitzgerald’s road, J. Doak, 10fd. PAYMENTS. The usual monthly accounts were passed tor payment, and the Bead adjourned.
