POPE HADRIAN.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sib, —In Friday’s issue you correct an error committed (on your ipse dixit ) regarding the omission of a very small word, and which was patent to all, or mart of yonr readers As we in New Zealand have been maligned a great deal in contemporary history, as granted on all hands, will you allow me to draw attention to a serious error committed in regard to the history of the 12th century in yesterday’s paper. Referring to Pope Hadrian IV, you Stated that he asued a Sail authorising Henry 11. to conquer Ireland.
As a matter of fact, it has been proved, in the first place, that the Bull was not, either verbally or actually, a permit to conquer Ireland, and secondly that the Bull (so called) was a forgery, as it bears a date five years subsequent to the death of the supposed signatory Pops. The supposed Bull was a matter of argument for a long time, but, if I mistake not, the lie was finally nailed by Bishop (now Cardinal) Moran, of Sydney, Your insertion of the above will once more record a protest Against the oftrepeated falsehood. —lam, Ac., Wm Adams.
