THE ASHBURTON UNEMPLOYED
On Saturday evening a number of the une') ployed held an open air meeting to consider the best means of obtaining further employment. After a good deal of speaking -s to the means to be used, it was ultimately agreed that a petition shouffi. be preeented to Hi* Worship the Ma-o , pointing out to him the real necessity of the ca>e. The meeting was unanimous in its opinion that an injustice had been done in Importing labor fom Christchurch while there were many cn- < mployed in Ashbtrton both able and only too gl»d to work for Government wages, It certainly does seem hard that the local m‘n should only obtain about five weeks wori while those from the city bad employment for at least two months. Not that the Aehburtoniana, we feel convinced, grudge their fellow unfortunates employment, but most naturally consider that if there was charitable aid work to be had, they had the priority of claim. We trust that H a Worship may see his way. either through the Borough Council i r by h a influence with the Government, *o obtain work to last over a few we:ks, by which time the harvest will be in fa 1 operation, and all laborers may, if they choose, find employment.
