The Ashburton Borough Council meets this evening. We understand that the gross amount realised by the Wesleyan bazaar is about £260. Those interested are reminded that nominations for the forthcoming meeting of the Ashburton Racing Club close this evening. The breakfast to newspapers runners and street boys in Christchurch on Saturday morning in connection with tha proposed boys’ brigade, was largely attended, over 100 hoys being present. These birds, we hear, are spreading into this part of the country, having been seen at various points from Lake Heron to Orari. The head money will be paid on delivery of the beaks at the offices of the Sheep Inspectors at [Ashburton or Christchurch. The entries for this year’s Metropolitan Show amount to 1069, or 199 less than las 4 year. The numbers are Sheep, 237; cattle, 111; horses, 92; other exhibits, 721. At the I Resident Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, before Mr D, Williamson, J.P., and D. Thomas, J.P., Henry Furneaux was fined 5s and costs for drunkenness, and on a charge of having used obscene language was ordered to be imprisoned for 48 hours.—Jonn Freeman, a cripple, and an inmate of the Old Men’s Home, was charged under section 28 sub-seotion 10 of the Police Offences Act, 1884, with being a suspected person, and having broken a window with intent to commit a felony. He was sentenced to -six months’ imprisonment, and ordered to pay the cost of repairing the window, 255. A further charge against Freeman of malicious injury to pro. perty by breaking a pane of glass valued at 25s in a window belonging to T. Chambers was withdrawn on the application of the police.—At the Court this morning, before Mr R. Alcorn, J.P., and Mr T, Bullock, J.P., two first offenders for drunkenness were fined 5s and costs, with the usual alternative.—R. Beale for a similar offence was mulcted in a like penalty, and for resisting Constable Beddck in the execution of his duty was fined 20s, or in default 48 hours’ imprisonment.— Francis Allen was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having no visible lawful means of support. The accused had been loafing round the public-houses and importuning the barkeepers and passers-by to give him beer. He was a strapping young fellow, and with a view to giving him a chance of amendmeut the police asked the Bench to deal leniently with the case. Allen was ordered to be imprisoned for three days with hard labour. The fourth anniversary of the Loyal Tinwald Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was celebrated by a ball, on Friday last, in the Temperance Hall, and proved nn unqualified success both financially and otherwise. The room had been tastefully decorated with evergreens, and mottoes kindly lent by the Ashburton Lodge for tha occasion. Notwithstanding tho fact that the hall has lately been enlarged, the building was at times inconveniently crowded. It was estimated there were between fifty and sixty couples present. Messrs Mayo, Leith, and Andrews supplied excellent music for the dancing, and Mr S. Rountree made a most efficient and obliging M.C. Several songs ■were sung during the evening, which helped to enliven the proceeding. Danoing was kept up until tha small hours of the morning, when tho company dispersed, everyone seeming to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
