THE GREAT BARRIER MURDER.

A rcKiiND, October 27, The steamer Wai ora, having on board Caff.ey, Penn, and the girl Graham, charged as murderers and access ry t' the Barrier tragedy, arrived at 11 o’clock this morning. There was a considerable crowd on Hie wharf, inc Tiding Penn’s father, who shouted to the prisoner, “Ncvor nffnd, rny hoy, we’ve got Napier to defend you ” The hoodlums in the crowd applauded Penn, who manifested a bold, defiant, and j runty ■air, while La :Vey seemed cold anil spiritless. The m-Po prisoners were heavily manacled, lag-irons being rivetted on. Toe three prisoners, along with a young man named Forsyth, arrested at Sydney for f ircery, were placed in cabs and conveyed to the lock-up. On the ) voyage Caffrey and Penn were very quiet, and were occasionally allowed to have tin it handcuffs oil' when they played euchre with groat enj lymeut. She stati a > aff ey drank a whole bot le of ruin before going ashore at Great Barrier, and attribute# the murder to his being drunk. During the voyage in the Sovereign of the Seas they ran short of water, and Buffered grealy from ‘hirst, but Caffrey says “ Providence sent rain,” which they caught in hockeys, etc During that time Graham wore male attire, and Pena never went to bed without saying prayers There was a tremendous crush at the Police Court this morning, It bring known the prisoners would be brought up, Later.
Caffrey, Penn, and Sarah Cleary, alias Grace Graham, were brought up at the Police Court before Mr H. P. Seth Smith, Pv,M., the two former charged with the wilful murder of Robert Taylor, and the gbl Graham with being an acc ssory after the fact. Mr Hudson Williamson, Crown Prosecutor, conducted the prosecutmn. Mr W. J. Napier appeared for Penn, and Mr Jackson Palmer for Caffrey, i n 1 Mr Brassey is watching the case on behalf of the Taylor family. Mr Napier applied to have the girl Cleary released, bot the Bench declined. _ All three prison* rs were remanded till Friday week. Mr Brassey, on behalf of Taylor ard family, has ia : d a separate information for murder which may cause a complication.
