It seems that fir iome reason he had been remi ved from the gaol to the Hunnjside As>ylum, and on Saturday morning, about one o’clock, he made a great disturbance in his cell, smashing the furniture, and doing all the damage he could. He finally made his escape hy dropping from a window about ten feet from the ground. By hiding in a ditch he managed to elude the warders in their search for him with lanterns, and when the road was clear he made his way to the Christchurch H .ispi'al, going to the room of Mr Brown ilia dresser, whom Martin knew, about six o’clock. Mr Brown immediately telephoned to the Asylum and Police Station, and several warders from the Asylum and two of the mounted police who had been searching for Martin during the night, and two constables went to the hospital ta secure Martin. As soon as the latter saw who wanted him, he assumed the defensive, and throwing off hia coat and taking up a piece of scantling he defied ihem. He was after a while however, pacified to such an extent that he agreed to go along with Mounted Constable Crockett in a cab, but declined the company of the warders, and was taken back to the .■* eylnm.
