The mat rail on the Manawatu'railway wilt be laid this evening, »lthough several days more will be occupied In ballasting Direct railway c mmunication with New Plymouth will then be established The ceremony of driving the last spike will be performed ‘with special festivities. For goods and stock the railway will be opened throughout next we k and passengers will be run on the Prince of ■Wales’ birthday. Arrangements are b«ing made so that passengers will be enabled to reach Napier thirteen hours after leaving Wellington Escape of a Prisoner. Dunboin October 22-
Fisher while being conveyed to Dunedin jumped off the train at Pelichet Bay station and made for the bush near the Northern Cemetery where he is believed to be biding. The constable jumped after him, spraining his foot.
