The b.b. Maroroa'with the inward San Francisco mails arrived at Auckland yesterday, after the fastest passage on record. Our usual budget of mail news appears elsewhere.
The following statement of a"aet3and liabilities has been filed in the Ashburton District Court: —Price, Emily, of Ashburton, boarding-house-keeper. Liabilities Ashburton :R. Lancaster, £4 0s 5d ; Grubb, £4 ; B. Smith, £3 ; S. Burnard, £5 ; Dimant and Coe, £1 Is; Meech and Co, £2 3s; T. Bullock, £4 4a ;D. MoFarlane, £7; sundries, £1 6a 6d. Total, £3l 14a lid. Assets—Furniture and effects (say), £2O. Deficiency, £ll 14a lid, A Committee meeting of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society was held at Mr Shury’s residence last evening to consider a letter received from the Colonial Secretary, asking whether tho Society would recommend the Governor to declare that hares should cease to be deemed game, within the meaning of the Animals Protection Acts, in the County of Ashburton, and if they have any objection to this being done. Having been recommended by the Ashburton County Council, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Tasker, seconded by Mr Mayo—“ That this Society beg to recommend the Governor to accede to the wishes of the Ashburton County Oouneil, that hares should cease to be deemed game within the boundaries of the county.” The meeting then terminated.
Platinum wire has been drawn so fine by H. F. Read, of Brooklyn, N.Y., as to be invisible to the naked eye, although its presence upon a perfectly white card could be detected by the touch, and could be seen by the aid of a small magnifying glass when the card was held in such a position that the wire oast a shadow.
An old lady has lately died in New York who was 76 at the time of her decease ; but from her eleventh birthday she had not grown an inch. She was just 4ft 3in high. She is described as having been a remarkably brilliant little woman, of great intellectual power, and a regular contributor to various first-olass periodicals.
There were 161 Protestant Churches in Japan, Ist January, 1886, with 11,602 communicants, 2706 (of whom were added in 1885. Their total contributions were 32,406 dollars 96 cents, or 64 dollars 15 cents more than in 1884.
Mr T. Bullock sold the privileges in connection with the forthcoming Agricultural and Pastoral Show at the Arcade this alter noon as follows; —No. 1 Publican’s booth, £5, Mrs Butler; No. 3 Publican’s Booth, £lO, Mrs Butler; No. 1 Confectioner’s booth, £4 10s Mr Hardley; No. 2 Confectioner’s booth, £4 10s, Mr Davis. The right of sports was not sold. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council will be held on Monday evening. Things seem to be looking up in the Geraldine district. The Tenmka■ Leader says that at the meeting of the Geraldine Road Board held on Tuesday tenders were opened for three small contracts. Only seven tenders were received for the whole of the works. Both Chairman and members remarked upon the very few tenders sent in, expressing the opinion that it pointed to the fact of very few men being out of work in the district. The Chairman stated that he had never seen such a small number of tenders sent in to the Board before.
A man advertised lately to forward, on tao iit of postage stamps, “ sound practical advice, that would be applicable at any time, and to all persons and conditions of life.” On receipt of the stamps, he sent his victim the following ; —“ Never give a boy a penny to hold your shadow while you climb a tree to look into the middle of next week.”
