BEACH’S DEPARTURE. London, October 14. William Beach, Australian sculler, sailed by the Lusitania to-day. He received an ovation from a crowd which assembled to witness his departure. THE FISHERIES DISPUTE. Ottawa October 14. The difficulty which has arisen between the Canadian and United States Governments, owing to the seizure by the former of the American schooner which failed to report at the Customs, has been amicably settled.
AU STIR A LI A N. COLONIAL DEFENCES. Melbourne, October 15. The papers in reference to the question of Colonial defences which have been presented to Parliament show that all the colonies have objected to bear the cost of a colonial navy, but the Governments of New South Wales and Queensland have agreed to pay interest on capital cost of the fleet and depreciation. The Victorian Govern ment, however, objected to this.
A HEAVY RAINFALL. Sydney October 15. A'severe gale, accompanied by heavy rains, has been blowing for the last twenty-four hours, during which time five and a-half inches of rain has fallen in Sydney. ALLEGED DEFALCATIONS. Melbourne, October 16. It is rumored that heavy defalcations have occurred on the part of an official in one of the local banks.
