In the case of the -ational Mutual I.if Association v London, for slander, the jury last night returned a verdict of one shilling on the first count. The question of coats will bo argued before the Ch-ef Justice in Chambers. The case attracted considerable attention am mg the Inaurrance community, as the defendant, a Government Insurance canvasser, hn used word* tending to show that i, was not safe to insure in the plaintiff’s Company, and thereby had materially damaged the National’s bnaiuess. The defendant, when In the box, would not admit having said that tbe Company was unsonnd, bat acknowledged having used Statements of an eminent actuary that no Company could pay over 25 per cent, for n w business without endangering its stability, and then quoting figures to show that the plaintiffs Company paid 34 ,ei cent, leaving hts hearers to draw their own Inferences. The Evening Post to-night publishes a letter received In Wellington from a digger at Kimberley, from which (lie following is ex’racted :—“ 1 am now nn whathey call the Kimberley goldfields.
