PROPOSED ANNEXATION OF NORFORK ISLAND.
According to the correspondent of the Neio Zealand Herald there is a feeling among h portion at least of the inhabitants of Norfo> k Island that it should bo annexed by New Zealand instead of New South Wales, The Hetald says:—“lt is ony 600 miles from New Zealand, and it Is 900 mdea from the nearest coast of Australia ai d 1100 miles from Sydney ; and as it is beyond the lolieg of east longitude, which is the legitimate limit of the jurisdiction of New South Wales, and as it comes no natuarally into the jurisdiction of New Zealand, it is really ii oumbent on the Government, if there is any chance of obtaining it, to take steps to have ibis charming little island and its interesting inhabitants made one with us. If we still Indulge the asp’ration of seeing New Zealand the centre of an oceanic con federation, Norfolk Island should certainly be included as a counterpoise on tf e west to Fiji, Navigators, and the rest, aud would be much more naturally administered from the island colony, with wh>oh it has so close commercial and religions relations.
