Writing of the public debt of the principal | colonies, the Taranaki Herald says that of Australasia rose from £10,680,000 in 1850 to £112,720,000 in 1881; that of Canada, in iha same number of years, from £14.230,000 to £38,310,000; and that of Smith Africa'from £420,000 to £23,365,000. Yet the public debt in the Australasian odlom«s only averaged 4J years’ revenue as against Syeajs in Ottfat Britain and 9 years in Franca.
