Wellington, September 26. White Island was m ac ive eruption on ta*urd<y. ’the people > £ Whakatane, at three o’clock on that day, observed vast columns of smoke aud ttiam blown into he air some hundreds of feet. No danger was apprehended, as, fortunately, the a|nd wae from the west.
