It is said that Jibe revenue of the Maories i om visitors to the P nk and White Terraces in 1884 was no less than £O3IO.
The largest gold nuggets ever found were the following : —The Sarah Sands nugget, found at Ballarat. It weighed IBOlbs, or 1500 oz. This, at £1 per ounce, would be worth £6210. T nche Darkly nugget, dug up at Kingower. It weighed, 1151bs, and was worth £6960. The Welcome nugget, found at Ballarat. It- weighed 1811bs, and wm sold for 10,000. This was the largest ever found.
It is curious what a mania seems to possess some people at Home to marry notorious, if they cannot get famous, wives. For ex. ample, Constance Kent, and other murderers, have been eagerly sought, and now we hear from the Irish correspondent of the Irish Times that:—“The story goes that Mrs Crawford received over a dozen offers of marriage during the hearing of the case, and that one of these was from a gentleman learned in the law and eniment in its practice, who had been captivated in court during the proceeding.” On the 31st May last the approximate number of sheep in New Zealand was H 5,200,000, being an increase ot 651,000 on the previous year. In Otago the number of sheep has increased during the year from 3,800,000 to 3,957,000.
We congratulate Captain W. St G. Douglas, of the Ashburton ililles, upon his promotion to the rank of Major, notice of which appears in Thursday’s “ Gazette.”
In connection with the correspondence rr the local Aclima isation Society and the fishing season, it may be mentioned that regulations for trout fishing, under the Salmon and Trout Act, iu North Canterbury, Nelson, South Canterbury, Geraldine, Waitaki, Otago, and Southland districts, are publishen in the “Gazette” of yesterday’s date.
