[Correspondent Lyttleton Times ] Tbs crime of infanticide is becoming alarmingly prevalent in Melbourne. Two bodies of infants were lately fonnd. At tha inquests verdicts of “ Wilful Murder” ware returned against some person or persons unknown. Acting on an article In the Age, the police made investigations, and found there were over ICO private lying-in establishments in Melbourne which are not subject to medical or police supervision. It is believed that sensational revelations will be forthcoming in connection with tba manner in which some establishments have been conducted The doctors say that every week newlyborn children are being e> nt to untimely graves. Many estab i hments are conducted by midwives who are not registered as snob, who do not keep a report of oases treated, and who, in fact, are subject to no supervision whatever, although fulfilling one of the meat important duties in life. Tha astounding discovery has also been made that registrars of births, marriages, and deaths in some of the suburbs have, in several Instances, given certificates of death upon the certificate of a chemist, instead of that of a du’y qualified medical practitioner.
