Dairy Factory. Wanganui, Septembar 20. At the annual meeting of the Dairy Factory Company on Sunday, the balance sheet showed a profit of £419 for the season, equal to 25 per cent on the paid up capital. The turn out of cheese was 39 tons 4 cwt. The Factory haa again started work and ths expectations are better for this season than last. Old Soldiers’ CoinnilHlon. The Old Soldiers* Commission opened here to-day before Majors Gudgeon and Crowe. Fifty claims have been sent In. The Colonial Exhibition. Wellington, September 20. By the ’Frisco Mail the Government has received a communication on the subject of keeping the Colonial Exhibition open beyond the original term Before coming to a decision the other colonies will be communicated with. T#l«R-rauh Insulators. . Regarding the manufacture of insulators Government is desirous of getting them manufactured in the colony if possible, and the tma for receiving h!>s three times been extended. Government has received many representations on the subject, but It is absolutely necessary to have a damp p'oof of the article. It has been compelled to make conditions very stringent. It has been asked to allow salt glaze to be used, but it Is not considered equal to the g hzi required. Colour is another difficulty. Government, recognising the importance of the subject, is anxious to see the manufacture established in the colony but objects to heavy additional expenditure being Imposed on Telegraph Department in order to encourage colonial industry in preference to the imported article. Loam to Focal Doilies. The Colonial Treasurer is preparing a jyrecis of the provisions of the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act and notice will shortly be given of a date when applications for loans can be granted, until they have obtained authority to raise them. This is given under the Local Bodies Loan Bill and the Counties Act. The latter comes into force in January, but the re quisite power Is in existence in the old Act. local Industry. Dunedin, September 20. A deputation to the Premier pointed out that the specifications forj'he manufacture of telegraph Insulators were of such a character as to preclude local competition, and that if they were altered 50 or CO men in the colony could find employment. ' Sir R Stout replied that the Government desired to encourage local industries where industries were possible, but Dr Lemon was of opinion that suitable clay could not be obtained in the colony* Se understood that if the insulators were manufactured hero the clay would have to be imported. If suitable material was obttinable here prefarencelwould be given to to the local manufacturer even at a slight Increase of cost. He would communicate with Sir J. Vogel on the subject. Fatal Accident. Mary Larkins, 6 years, was killed by a tram car running over her at Cargill road on Saturday. Her legs and arms were crushed. She died shortly after admission to the hospital. The Invercargill prospectors for Big Bay, 105 in number, arrived by the noon train and embarked their luggage during the afternoon, but owing to strong westerly winds and- thick weather, a start was not made until 10 o’clock this morning. Much interest- has been displayed here as well as Invercargill In the movement and cheers were given as the vessel steamed from the wharf.
