FOOTBALL.
Napier, September 16. At a meeting to-night of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union the following telegram was read from the New South Wales fo tball team.—“ Your telegram yesterday caused ns needless pain. Yen have judged us most unfairly, and jumped at a conclusion yon had no right to. We play Wellington Friday, and wired for terms on Saturday’s match instead of Monday, and received your reply. We think an apology due for the insult you have offered our Union. If anch be forthcoming, we will accept your error as a misunderstanding, and will expect to p'ay you on Saturday. W# are sorry yoi (bought so badly of us. Wire reply Occidental Hotel, Wellington.— Me Arthur. ” The folio«lag reply was resolved to be sent to-morrow : “ Tour telegram was as follows:—“ What will you guarantee for match Saturday if we play you Instead Wellington.” Your telegram now quite removes the Impression which your former telegram created, and we are glad the expressions used in the former telegram are explained satisfactorily, and that the construction we placed on your telegram not intended to be conveyed. We shall therefore be happy to play you on Saturday. Our guarantee of expenses remain at before, £2O. Please urge Union Company to despatch steamer early ou Friday so as to arrive not later than noon on Saturday. We shall be able to detain the steamer on Saturday nigl tH» enable you to dine with as.”
