Auckland, September 14. The atearaer Southern Cross, from Gisborne, had a stormy passage. Eight bullocks died in the forehold, and IEO sheep were drowned on deck. An accident happened to the machinery which stopped the engines for ten hours. During the height of the gale the topsail and maintopaail were blown away. Every effort made to save the stock was fruitless. Wellington, September 14.
A case was heard at the B. M. Court today, in which Mr A. Toung sued Captain Russell, President of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, for £l6. Mr Young took over the horses Poet and Minerva from Mr Bate at a time when the forfeit money was due on them to several clubs under protest. Be bauded over cheques for the amount, to be held, as he alleged, pending the decision of the Canterbury Club on the question. The latter gave it in his favor, and the Wellington Clubs gave back the cheques. The Napier Club declined to do so, and Mr Young sued them. Judgment was given against him, with cos's, on the ground that the weight cf evidence was in favor of his intention that the Hawke’s Bay J.C. was to be the arbiter, aud not the 0.J.0.
The annual meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association was held to-night A letter was read from Mr Tennant in reference to the visit of the English team, and the matter was referred to the finance Committee for consideration. The following resolution was carried :—“ That this Association correspond with the Auckland, Canterbury, and Otrgo Associations with a view to getting a New Zealand eleven to play against the Australian team daring their approaching tour, and, farther, if practicable, to arrange a North t South match, to bo played previously/*
