correspondence. Letters were read—(l) From Mr W. Badger, re “ Local Government Guide and Ratepayers’ Manual. Resolved to procure one copy.—(2) From Mr R. McAllister, asking for drain along the Waterton Road to get rid of stagnant water. Left till next meeting for consideration.—(3) From Mr J. Cleaver, offering to take reserve near Bundle’s. It was resolved that the reserve be let for one year at a nominal rent, the occupier to clear all gorse off the land and fence it. GOBSB ON ROADS. It was resolved that tenders be invited to grab up gorse on roads opposite the gravel reserve, and out the fences. Reserves near Wood’s to have rough gates put at openings. surveyors’ report.
1. Ford, Waterton road.—We have inspected this ford and the outlet for drainage, the subject of an application by Mr Gilmour at lost meeting Wo find that the ford is too high, and backs up the water on Mr Gilmour’s land. As the
ford is a good one. and it would be inadvisable to alter its present firmness, we suggest that earthenware pipes be put in where the old culvert was taken up, which would carry the water now backed up by the ford. It would saetn that the drain ou the lower side of the road on Mr Crossen’s property is insufficient to ca r ry off the water, and should be made wider, and also suitable swing panels should be erected on the lower side of the road. We also inspected the outlet for the water on Shepherd’s road, and owing to the wetness of the season it was easy to find where the water should cross, but owing to the formation of the toad the water backs up, and also makes the road in a boggy state. A ford should be made. We may say that there does not seem a well-defined channel through Mr Magee's land, but there is no doubt the water should not be allowed to stand on and injure the road, and should follow its natural outlet.
2. Gullies on road from Ashton to Beach. —We have examined these gnllies, and find that ilia ‘damage done is not very serious, and can be ea ily remedied, so as to make them as formerly existing. 3. Mill ioad.—The late floods have scoured away the approaches on each side of the gully crossing this road, between Messrs Weston’s and Davies’ property, 4. Surveyor’s road,—One of the bridges on this road baa become considerably damaged by the scouring away of the sill supports. It will be necessary to drive piles and re-deck the bridge, 5. Bridge, Waterton road.—We have examined the bridge over Ford's creek as far as practicable, owing to the height of the water, and so far find that the understructure is sound. We will again examine when the water has farther subsided. 6. Beach road. —The approach to the Boundary creek having been washed away we have had same repaired. 7. Maintenance. The maintenance man’s diary lies on the table. 8. Boundary road.—We have examined
this road with regard to the claim sent
in by the Coldstream Road Board for work. Shingle has been put In the road
to fill the rats in and make a track for traffic for about 35 chains from the river Binds, and few chains further of tussocks cleared from the centre of the road. We think that portion of the money could have been better spent in repa'ring some of the bad places towards Windermere road. The work done we
consider very expensive. 9. Horsey’s road.— We have examined this road as far as practicable, and will report further when toad is fit. At present it is in an impassable state, and impossible to do anything. Clause I.—Resolved to have ford made on Shepherd’s road, and inform Mr Crosaens that he must erect swing panels at the entrance of the creek to his land; Consideration regarding putting in pipes at old culvert between Messrs Crossen’s and Oilmour’s properties was deferred till next meeting. Clause 2.—A price having been laid before the Board, resolved that the Surveyor have onttinga reduced and road made more passable for traffic. Clauses 3 and 4.—To stand over till next meeting. Clause 8 —The Board'ex pressed Itself dissatisfied ,with the amount of account paid to the contractors, v'z , £l7 5s 4d. but after some discussion it was resolved to forward cheque for half cost, RUTS.
The Surveyor was Instructed to have rots on Osborne's road filled in. RATE.
