CHANGING THE GUAGE.
A Carets* Kaliway operation.
An important operation was to be accomplished on May 31 and June 1 in the United States, when f e guage of the Southern railways was to be changed to the Northern or standard guage, 4ft 9n, which is considered more convenient. Describing Ihs work to be done, an American paper of recent date says : —Nearly 13,000 miles of rai’wiy will have to be changed in about 12 hours, and without interruption to the running of many of the important trains, even on the day the change tikes pl&ca The change of guage will affect almost every railway south of the Ohio and Potomac rivers, the extent, of road the various Southern states being distributed as follows .-—Georgia, 2143 miles ; Tennessee, I*B6 miles ; Alabama, 1803 miles ; South Carolina, 1320 miles ; Florida. 1250 miles ; Kentucky. 1118 miles ; Virginia, 981 miles ; No-th Carolina, 960 miles; Mississipi, 776 miles, Loulslns, 313 miles.
