SHIPPING, Capetown, September 3. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s Tainui left for New Zealand this afternoon. San Francisco, September 5 The Union Company’s Mararoa arrived yesterday from Auckland (August 17th). London, September 6 The P. and O. Company’s Shannon, from Melbourne (July 13th), arrived at Plymouth to-day. Australian mails ex P. and O. Company’s Ballarat, which left Melbourne on August 19th, were delivered here on Saturday, via Brindisi.
NEW GUINEA. London, September 2. I Mr Garrick, Agent-General for Queensland, bad an interview yesterday with Mr Edward Stanhope, Secretary of State for the Colonies, who informed him that a scheme for the joint administration of New Guinea by the Governments of Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria would shortly be submitted to the Cabinet. THE NEW HEBRIDES. London. September 6. In the House of Commons to-day Mr Edward Stanhope, Secretary of State for the Colonies, in reply to a question, stated that he entertained strong hopes that a settlement of the New Hebrides question favorable to Australia would be arrived at with France at an early date.
DEPORTATION OF CRIMINALS.
London, September?. In the House of Commons last night the Right Hon. E. Stanhope, Secretary for the Colonies, stated in reply to a question that Government were pressing the French Government to abstain from deportation of criminals to the Pacific.

In the Legislative Assembly Sir Patrick Jennings announced that the Government intended to proceed with the proposed increase in the Customs tariff, and the question of land and income taxes would receive further consideration by the Cabinet.
MELBOURNE GRAIN MARKET. Melbourne, September 8 The manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand reports as follows;—Shipping wheat market strong at 5s 4d to 5s $d per bushel; malting barley is quieter but steady at 3s gd to 4s 6d; oats, New Zealand feed sorts, moderate enquiry, slightly improved tendency, 3s 2d to 3s 4d ; New Zealand milling descriptions steady, 3s 4d to 3s sd; New Zealand oats under bond, 2s $d to 2s yd.

Chairman of the Standing Committal of the Federal Council with the view tc united action being taken by tht colonies in regard to the New Hebrides also to adopt necessary measures foi protection of th; colonies from an influx of recidivistes. In the Legislative Assembly last night Mr Mclntyre gave notice of a question on the subject. CABLE COMMUNICATION. Adelaide, September 8. Cable routes from Penang to Madras and Rangoon ?re still intmupte ’J The I only routes open westward are Singapore via Hongkong and Cochin China. At increased rates telegrams are being despatched by steamer over the interrupted section between Penang and Rangoon, as opportunity offers. The passage occupies four days.
