A football match was played on the Borough School ground yesterday by a picked ;eam from Hampstead and Tinwald Schools igainst one from the Borough School. The play, which showed a decided improvement in the players from each school, resulted in a win for the Borough by 11 points to nil. For the winners J. Husband, W. Love, W. Kidd, and W. Jamieson played well, and for the losers A. Jamieson, It. Williams, G. Clark, W. Clark, R. Armstrong, and A. Williams did good service. The Borough School plays Rakaia School on the same ground to-day.
At the R.M. Court this morning, before Mr r. Bullock, J.P., M. Duggan, for having been kunk in East'street, was finlOs and costa with the usual alternative. Jeremiah Leary, foi having been drunk in Wills street, was fined 10s and costs with the alternative of 24 hours imprisonment, and for having made use of profane and obscene language was ordered t( bo imprisoned for three days. der for drunkenness was fined 5s and costs, in default 24 hours imprisonment. An experiment was made recently at Pavia, in Italy, with two swallows, to determine their speed. Two hen birds were taken from their broods, carried to Milan, and there released at a given hour. Both made their way back to their nests in 13 minutes, which gave their rate of speed at 8?i miles an hour. The Eev Mr Kerry and Mrs Kerry, whc have been engaged in missionary work in India for many years, conducted a mission meeting in the Town Hall last evening. The ohaii was occupied by Mr Sawle.
