ASHBURTON— To-Day. [Before Mr H, 0. S. Baddeley, R.M DRUNKENNESS For this offence Francis Adam was fined 10s and coats with the alternative of 48 hoars imprisonment. SNOWBALLING. J. Rodder F. Tasker and F. Ber y were charged on the information af B Hughes with having behaved in a manner eaten lattd to create a bre .ch of the Peace. —Rodder pleaded not guilty ; Tasker and Berry admitted having thrown snowballs, bat denied having thrown them with the intention of striking the informant —The names of Edward Bartlett and Thomas Kane also appeared on the Information, but as summonses bad not been served on them the charge against them was strook out, and it was decided to again take proceedings against them. —The following evidence was taken ; B, Hughes said that about 4 p m. on the 27th lost while at the corner of East and Barnett street he saw a mob of what were oolonially termed larrikins ” throwing snowballs. Wishing to avoid them, be went into Scott’s stables when the lads assembled In front and commenced an onslaught on him. He gave particulars of blows he had received from anowballs. The snowballs he said were generally very hard as If they had been intentionally placed In water. Rodder and Tasker ware very impertinent to witness, the former appeared to be the leader of the gang.—J. R- Oolyer also gave evidence. Constable Beddek said that on the 27th inat, when Mr Hughes ado a complaint to him, Bodder, who was standing near, said" Oh, It doesn't matter If we are bronght up to Conrt. We will be dismissed with a caution”. Witness knew Rodder to be ona of the worst .arrikins in the town ; several complaints had been made against him On the day in qnesMon many persons, including a lady, bad complained to him of the manner in which snowballing had been cirried on, the snowballs used having been frozen hard. One >gentleman told witness that he had been ’ hit by a snowball which after striking him fell on the pavement bat did not break.— -This was all the evidence. —The Magis—tote, addressing the accused, referred in ■ very severe terms to their conduct, Rodder ho characterised as a “bully larrikin,” and said that It would be well for Tesker and Berry to keep out of his company in future. Tasker and Barry would each be find 10s and costs ; Rodder would be find £1 and costs The Court then ro_e.
