THE BIG BAY GOLD.
In the course of a letter to the Times, Invercargill, giving soma of hla rambles on the West Coast, Mr Samuel H. Moreton, artist, records thus op the gold fr duction at places he visited: —“As regards the George River, which is 30 miles south of Jackson’s Bay, I passed that myself In May 1835. At that time there were three parties working on the beach ; one of them was a man with a history— ‘James Teir,’ of the Aucklai d Islam's (Genet al Grant) catastrophe Frrm his own lips ho told me they (his three nephews and self) averaged from £lO to £3O a week. They got their piovislons in this manner—they chufly dealt with the Wellington people, and than stores were brought to Jackson’s Bay for £3 per ton by the Stella, when they boated them themselves the rest. When at Parika (naua'ly called Parlnga) I taw a party who had been working and had averaged £lO a week a man, and considered this would last at least six months longer. I met plenty of the others when I had gained their confidence, : nd removed suspicion, who were doing well \ and in conclusion, let mo add, that I h, ye no doubt at all about the gold, but as 1 said, I have every doubt about those who talk about it but won’t work for it, and who wish the Government to come end spoon the victuals into the'r mouths ’ (
