Auckland, August 24,

At a mas* meeting of unemployed, Messrs Peacock, Thompson, and Moss, M.H.R.’s, delivered addresses. A vote of censure was passed on Mr Peaccck for inaction about the unemployed In the Assembly, and a vote of (thanks to Messrs Thompson and Moss for the s’epa taken by them was carried. Owing to the Bell having denounced a □umber of the unemployed at the mass meeting as loafers who did not work and would not work, at the close of the meet' Ing to day, a deputation was appointed’ consisted of Messrs Farm 11 (O'.airman o' the unemployed), BaHay and Jenne to In ’ tervlew Mr G. M, Reid, editor of the Bell t and demind that an apology be printed.

The crowd followed the deputation, but on reaching the Bell office found Superintendent Thompson, who had got wind of the sfftir, and a detachment of police on the ground. Superintendent Thompson informed the crowd they could not go in, but two or three might to represent their sentiments The editor threatened to eject one of the deputationists for strong language, and refused to apologise for the article or retract. Mr Moss, MH.R., has suggested to Sir Julius Vogel utilising the unemployed under the Forestry Department In planting wattle and other t ees on Grown lands adjacent to Swanson and Watekere railway stations on the Kaipara line. Sir J. Vogel replied that the suggestion Is a reasonable one, bat It is too late to I give effect to on a large seale this season. Professor Kirk will proceed to Auckland to-morrow, and will take some men to Rangiritl, and also endeavor to put some other plantation work in hand. Three hundred unemployed are now on publio works, Government and Municipal.
