At the R.M. Court this morning, before Mi T. Bullock, J.P., and Mr Hind, J.P., two first offenders for drunkenness were each fined 5a and costs, with the usual alternative. We again remind our readers of the groat treat in store for them at the Tea Meeting of the year—that of the Ashburton Presbyterian Church—to-morrow evening. By the musical programme, as advertised, the meeting this year promises to be even unusually enjoyable, Mr Joseph Ivess.VM.H.R. for Wakanui, past through Ashburton by the express this morning en route for Timaru. The usual monthly meeting of the Mount lutt Hoad Board was held at the Hoad Board )flico, Mothven, on Thursday. Present— Messrs J. Jackson (Chairman), W. McMillan, 1. Cameron (Sp.lngfield), and G. H. Alingon. The Overseer’s report was read. Messrs Nee’s request was ranted. Mr Chapman wrote calling the loard’s attention to certain repairs required y the Coach road. Ordered to be attended >. A letter was received from the Kailway epartment stating that instructions had >en issued to erect yards lor trucking sheep id cattle both at Methven and Laurlston ailway stations. A letter was received from o Commissioner ofj Property Tax, asking , e Board to forward an application for the | lance of the Government subsidy. Tba j lairman stated that the necessary applica- j m had been made, but that the amount had it been forwarded as yet. The Overseer , is Instructed to ask the Upper Ashburton lad Board if it will make arrangements for crying the storm water which collect at a boundary between the two districts to j gully near Mr Bland’s gate. A petition to the Assembly, in reference to the purchase of Stark’s property has been circulated for signature in Auckland by a strong local Committee. It sets out that the purchase is a 'very great public wrong, and prays the Hotfse to appoint a Commission to taka evidence in Auckland.
A successful 'trial has been made of the electric light fixed at Fort Enhance for defence purposes. Wo have been requested to state that Messrs J. Scanlon and A. Cookson, not Messrs Wilkinson and &. Cookson as reported, provided the dance music at the Waterloo entertainment on Friday, August 5.
It has been ascertained that Mr J. L. Coster who was elected a director of the Now Zealand Shipping at the annual meeting was not qualified, and &' meeting has been called for'August 25th to elect a director.
The North Canterbury Teachers’ Institute met on Saturday to consider the Inspector’s reports which gave rise to the recent scare and Board of Education Commission of Enquiry. It was resolved that the sample questions Jgiven in the reports were easier than those given in] actual examination;
that too much value had been attached to percentages, which were [uncertain tests of mental progress; that the blame in the reports was not discriminative enough. The usually ; monthly meeting of the Waterloo Library Committee was held in the Library Hall, on Friday evening. Present— Messrs Taylor (in the Chair), Blee, Soal, and R. Gilmour. The minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, the Treasurer read bis report which showed a handsome balance in band. It was resolved to spend £5 in the purchase of new books at once. It was agreed to hold a concert at an early date in aid of the Library fund. After the transaction of some other business the meeting adjourned.
A moeting’of the Methven Domain Board' was hold at the Road Board office, Methven on Thursday afternoon. Present—Messrs J. Jackson (Chairman), D. Cameron (Springfield), G. H. Alington, and W. McMillan. The Clerk reported that the present lessee’s term had expired, and it was resolved to re-let the ground for two crops. The Clerk was instructed to prepare conditions and invite separate tenders for cropping the land and’ planting about 5000 trees ; tenders to be’sent in by Friday, August 20. The Ground Committee was authorised to purchase suitable, trees, and to accept tenders.
