The Janet Niooll arrived at Auckland yesterday from the Islands. After leaving Tonga she visited the now volcanic island. Large volumes of smoke were issuing from the crater, and there were hundreds of rents in the earth. Mr Daniel Blackwood, second engineer, died on the voyage. The Captain hoard nothing of the Sovereign of the Seas or of Caflery and Penn at the Islands.
A largo meeting of farmers and others was 1 held at Gisborne [yesterday to consider the | question of freezing sheep. It was intimated that Mr Nelson, of Napier, would start freezing if he got a guarantee of sufficient sheep. A list of sheep that could be guaranteed was made, and amount to 40,000, and there is every probability of this number being augmented.
At a meeting of the Canterbury Land Board 1 held on Thursday the following sales of land were reported:—Perpetual lease of reserve 2G4 at Dromore. Section 1 leased to Thomas Miles 24 acres ; section 2, 50 acres, Daniel O’Hare 1 section 3, 50 acres, to George Campbell; section 5. 50 acres, to Donald Campbell; section 7, 50 aorCa, to John M’Mullin; j section 8, 50 acres, to David Lynch ; section 9, 41 acres, to W. Dalgety; section 11, 50 to John Gough; section 12, 50 acres, to 1 Thomas Happer; section 13, 50 acres, to 1 John Miles.
The privileges in connection with the forth-1 coming Hunt Club Steeplechases were offered by auction at Mr Alfred Harrison’s rooms this afternoon. None of the reserves were reached and the auctioneer announced that he was prepared to treat privately for the sale of the different lots. i The usual monthly meeting of the Longbeach Road Board was held yesterday. Owing to pressure on out space out report is held over.
