Trade and Labor Oounci!. Auckland, August 14
At a meeting of the Trade and Labor Council a telegram wss read showing that the wages of engine drivers and firemen on the Vic orian and New South Wales Railways were 20 per cent, higher than in New Zealand. No decision was come to as to action. A grievance was stated by the Lumper’s Union, the men not being allowed more than sis hours daily in the winter time, owing to tho hours being fixed by the Customs Department Tho Secretary was instructed to write' to Sir Julius Vogel, who formerly promised to amend the matter.

The Wellington footballers landed this morning. They were mot by a reception Committee and driven to the Criterion Hotel, where they breakfasted. They were a forwards driven in a four horse brake to the Recreation Ground. The weather is splendid and the ground fast. The match begins at 2.30. A f; 't game is expected as both teams are very strong in forwards. The beti : ng is slightly In favor of the visitors.
