SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD
The usual monthly meeting of the r South Rakaia Road Board was iheld on I Thursday. {Present —Messrs Coster (Chairi man), Allan, Mulligan, and Tucker. clerk’s report. s The Clerk reported that the contractors for maintaining the roads Commenced work r on July 12th, and were both shingling i Contracts had been finished on tho Settlement satisfactorily. Cronin’s contract’was ’ not progressing as it should ;he proposed ■ to commencs removing culverts next week, and complete the work in a month, i Since the last meeting the sub-committee had accepted Hughes’ tender fortussocking, i Acton road, at lOd per chain. During the menth rates to the amount of £l7 15s lOd had been collected, and it would be necess eary to issue a number of summonses. [ He recommended the remission of the rates of a ratepayer who was in indigent circumstances, * BATES. It was resolved to remit the rates in i tho case recommended by the Clerk. CART SHED. 1 It was resolved to erect a new cart shed > with materials on hand.
ROAD. > Messrs Lyttelton and Holmes requested : that some thirty chains of road in their ■ district he re-formed.—The application was granted. ‘ BALLAST PITS. > Mr Allan stated that the N.Z. and A. • Company were willing to sell an acre of ! land for £ls for a ballast pit, on the 1 understanding that he could remove the 1 trees, as they were removed on R.S. 16124. If a pit wore required on R.S. 1 1584 Cit would have to be taken under the Public Works Act. t g|The Clerk was instructed to enquire i what pits could be obtained on Mainwa ing road, before next meeting. ; ACCOUNT IN DISPUTE. The Chairman stated that he had heard nothing further about the Ellesmere Road Board account. It was still in the hands of the solicitors. SALE. Messrs Matson, Cox, and Co. wrote re the sale of horses and harness, stating that these realized £39 16s, clear of all expenses, unemployed. The Chairman reported that about half-a-dozen men from the Settlement had informed him they conld not obtain work. It was resolved to call for tenders for grubbing gorse and tussocks on the plantations, in six contracts ; to be in by the 14th; the Chairman and one member to
accept tenders. MAINTCNAKCS CONTRACT. Mr Osborne wrote, declining to take up the tender for maintaining the reads vest of the railway. Mr Sheehan’s tender was accepted st £l9O. —Mr Murphy wrote stating that the work should have been given.to him in justice.—The clerk was Instructed to reply that Mr Sheehan’s tender was accepted. WAiEB R4CBS. The Engineer to the Council wrote with reference to Mr Silcocb’e account for making water races.—lt was resolved to piss the account, £3 15s 7d, and charge same to sett’ement account. FINANCIAL The credit balance in bank was stated to be £IO7O 16a 7d. It was decided to deposit £6OO for three months.
STOCK AT LARGE. Mr Allan complained of the great I number of sheep and other stock being depastured on the roads, and other members of tho Board quite agreed with I h e remarks. The Ranger was instructed to impound all stock illegally on the roads. KENT. Mr J. Shanka at 6i 3d por chain. No tender was accepted for Bofggswhare road, and it wis res dved ta call for tenders tor ploughing, harrowing and sowing grass on same PAYSIESTS. Aeoouate amounting to £135 12s 3d ware passed for payment, the Pound book Inspected, and the Board adj earned.
