The annual Volunteer Ball was held at the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening, and was certainly one of thejmost successful affairs of the kind ever held'in Ashburton. There was a very large attendance, about two hundred guests being present, and dancing to the strains of the Ashburton Brass Band was kept up with spirit until the small hours. The hall was very prettily and tastefully decorated. Military stars, formed with bayonets and scabbards, were prominent among the decorations, while evergreens were advantageously made use of. The mottoes of the two Bifle Companies, and of the 0.Y.C., formed with frosted leaves on a red back ground, added materially to the pretty appearance of the room, and with the presence of the gay dresses of the ladies and the uniforms of the Volunteers combined to make a very effective scene.

Attention is directed to Mr Andrew Orr’s

great drapery sale which will be continued at the Arcade on S Uurday. The Ashburton Bides and Guards paraded for inspection at the drill shed last evening. Colonel Bailey was inspecting officer, and the corps were under the command of Captains Douglas and Northey. There were about 50 Rifles and 40 Guards on parade, and a number of movements were executed with commendable precision. At the conclusion of the inspection Captain Douglas announced that a church parade for both companies would take place next Sunday. Captain Northey, addressing his own corps (the Guards), said the inspecting officer had expressed himself as highly pleased with the large muster, drill, and general appearance of the corps, and had little doubt that the report he would be able to forward to headquarters would result in the Guards securing the usual capitation allowance. The corps were then dismissed. At the R.M.'CourtJthis morning, before Mr D. Williamson, J.P., and Mr D. Thomas, J.P., a first offender charged with drunkenness was dismissed with a caution.

A somewhat peculiar point has arisen at Dunedin under the Bankruptcy Act. A bankrupt’s only assets consist of furniture&o., valued at £2O. Some £l6 is due for rent, and the point is whether the landlord has a preferential claim, as nnder the amended law goods to the value of £25 are exempt from seizure. The eight Natives charged with pig stealing were brought up at Mania yesterday. As it appeared from the evidence that seven of them ] were acting under thejdirection of the eighth I they were discharged with a warning, and the I ringleader waa sentenced to three months’ 1 hard labor.

ship Oamara fell into the harbor while drunk and would have been drowned but (or McConnell, the Steward of the'steamer Akaroa, who plunged in and rescued him. This is the second time McConnell has saved life at the risk of his own.

The Lyttelton Borough Council has decided to borrow £3OOO from the Government Insurance Department.

Some anxiety is felt at the non-arrival of the schooner Omaha, which trades with the Chathams, under jtho command ot Captain Goodman. She was reported all well at the Chathams on May 27th, and was expected to leave for Lyttelton a month later. The run from the Chathams to Lyttelton occupies a week under favorable circumstances, and a

fortnight is an exceptionally long run, so that the vessel is more than a fortnight overdue, and there is a feeling that something should be done to ascertain her whereabouts. She may have gone ashore at the Chathams, and remained there hard and frst, thus cutting off all communication with the islanders and New Zealand,
