THE UNEMPLOYED QUESTION.

Auckland, July 2

The Premier telegraphs in reply to message from unemployed—“ Very sorry to learn men nm of employment. Will consult Minister of Public Works and see what will be done.”

Dunedin, July 21

A large meeting of unemployed held in the Octagon to-day was addressed by t‘ e Mayor and several Councillors. The list showed 93 men, representing 350 souls unable to get work. It is proposed to memorialise Government. After the meeting the Mayor sent the following telegram t' the Premier :—“ At the request of a la>-ge number of unemployed present at a meeting to-day, I forward by post the petition of 179 laborers, praying for work in town or country. There are 143 wives and 467 children, making a total of 790 souls, stated to be on the verge of starvation. The men say that 6s per day is the least they can exist, on in the country, and nearly all are destitute of blankets and clothing. They aak, as an alternative, is town work, at 4a 6d or 4s 5 or country work, at 6?, cannot be provided ” The Mayor also sent a private telegram to the Premier, stating that th i tvaoes asked were not unreasonable, and that I hey were waiting patiently for the authorities to do something.
