CHARITABLE AID
Important Decision. Blenheim, July 20
An Important d 0 aio i »»» glvjn by the Commitstonera appointed to hear the appeal Awatere Road Board against the contribution lavied by the District Hospital Board for Hospital maintenance and charitable aid That Board assessed all contributing bodies at the same rate in the £ on rateable value. The Awatere Board appealed on the ground of soia'l population, few patients, and distance from Hospital. The Commissioner:! held that the Act gave them discretionary power to vary contributions, and that it was not necessary that contributing boiifi should pay at the same rate. They held that unless power to reduce contributions was given by the Act, right of appeal on I the ground that assessment was unjust would be meaningless. The Commit* sloners reduced the assessment to om ■ twelfth of a penny on the capita! value, the effect being that the District Board will have to Increase contribution from the borough of Blenheim by 60 per cent., as other country contributing bodies wii follow the Awatere Board’s example
