District Railways Purchase.
The Lyttelton Tunes of this morning, ' refen mg to the report of the District . Railways Purchase Committee, says; The Chairman had very little to say, which is of itself most remarkable. What he did say was still more wonderful. He did not move the adoption of the report (x) because he wanted to hear it criticised, (a) because the Premier took the matter ont of his hands by adjourning the discussion, and (3) because the matter never was in his hands, as he had no instructions from the Committee. This reminds us of the story of the forty reasons why the gun was not fired in honor of good Queen Bess, the last of which was that there was no powder. The first is a confession on the part of the Chairman of want of the courage of his convictions. The third is a similar confesson on behalf of the Committee, and the second being in the mouth of the man who was expected to move the adoption of the report before the adjournment of the debate, is nothing more or less than an evasion. |The
Committee went outside the Order of Reference. It did so for a strong public reason, we presume, yet neither the Committee nor its Chairman thought the reason strong enough to ask the House to adopt its conclusions. The idea is preposterous. The defence of the Chairman is the lamest on record. We have often heard of a double shuffle.
