A petition has been lodged against the return of Mr Alexander McArthur for Buckrose division of Yorkshire.
Sir Evelyn Ashley, who was Under Secretary for the Colonies in the previous Gladstone Administration, has been defeated.
It is expected the Ministry will tender their resignation immediately, but it is considered unlikely that a coalition will be effected between the Conservatives and Unionists.
Lord Granville has announced his intention of retiring into private life.
