DROUGHT IN SOUTH AMERICA.
“ Information to hand places it beyond ■ doubt that the Argentine Uopu "die sheep ‘ Interests am suffering severely fr. m dry we <ther. The estimate is that die los.-es of sheep this year are fully 5 000,CIO In many places the Esses of live stick exceeded 50 per cent of the whole. In connection with the wool produce of the Re -üblic, ft well known Dar’mg JJowrs breeder, now In England, has be en tn .k ing inquiries on the sabjscb and sends ti e following items of inform dioti as ihe reui't Ihe imports of wool into Europe fro o the Argentine Kepnbb last yar we-e 360,001 bales of about TW-b each, th’s being about double the production c f dape wools and nearly one-h «lf the quantity produced in Austrda, tho respecti' o productions in millions of pound* l being : j Australasia, 227; South Aftioa, PS ; and River Plate, 110. 'the South American wool is shipped almost ontii ly to Antwerp and Havre The q i y condones to improve in yi' bl firmness, length of staple, andglos. a por ion of it even rivalling the Australian wools. From reliable informat on received by this gentleman from those well acquainted with tho country, it appears that tho extensive district in t ;, e Hope Id ic best suited for wools of the Australian type has not yet b en stocked ; that the country first stocked is muo adapted to the English breed of sheep; and Jiat the more favorable districts will all be taken np in time and stocked. Ho has forwarded a sample of River Plate meiino wool, said to be a fair average specimen of that sold in London. It certainly shows quality and fineness, but is badly matured, wanting in fieeness, fuz"v on the tips, and sadly deficient in that' beautiful lustre and gloss so cliarac- I terihiic in our superior wools. It would , rank as a second-class fine wool hero, such ( as is produced in some of the unimproved j flo* ks in the outlying districts
